Sort suggestions by “trending”

Last updated:

Since the day we launched, Feature Upvote has offered your customers two views of your feature requests: “Top” or “New”.

“Top” means the most popular suggestions show first. “New” means the most recent suggestions show first.

We’ve just added a third order, “Trending”.

“Trending” is now available on all Feature Upvote boards.

What does “Trending” show?

At the moment, our answer is a bit vague.

It turns out to be surprisingly hard to define and implement a “Trending” view which:

  1. is implemented in a way that keeps our database lookups, inserts, and updates all lightning fast
  2. works in a logical way for all our customers, whether they have 50 or 5,000 suggestions on their feedback board
  3. doesn’t suffer from statistical anomalies.

Fortunately this type of challenge, that combines coding, performance, and UX, is exactly the type of challenge we enjoy.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be trying out some different algorithms for the “Trending” view. We want to see if any particular approach produces strong feedback, either for or against, before we settle on a definitive solution.
