NHS Digital API feedback board

NHS Digital is the national provider of information, data and IT systems for health and social professionals in England.

The organisation’s developer hub uses Feature Upvote to gather and prioritise suggestions for the API platform which hosts an increasing number of healthcare APIs.

We spoke with Tony Heap, Lead Product Owner for API Management, who opened the Feature Upvote account in 2020.

What problem were you facing that led you to try Feature Upvote?

The team at NHS Digital started using Feature Upvote to solve two problems:

1. We wanted a way for our product team to let customers and potential customers know what APIs and features we were working on.

2. We wanted API consumers to tell us which features they would like to see, or to lend their support to the features we are already planning.

What have you discovered about your product by using Feature Upvote?

When they started collecting product feedback, the team discovered that certain features, though resource-intensive, needed to be prioritised.

We found out that API consumers would like a performance test environment. That would be expensive to provide and it would be easy to ignore. But the number of votes keeps staring us in the face and at some point, we will have to consider it seriously.

What specific feature do you like most about Feature Upvote?

One of Tony’s favourite features is the ability for contributors to share feedback without having to log in or create an account.

It’s so frictionless to use.

A close second is the dynamic search functionality, which shows users existing feature requests as they type and prevents duplicate requests.

I wish we had that on our site!

Have you found any other unexpected benefits of using Feature Upvote? If so, what are they?

It helps in conversations with stakeholders. If we need to persuade them that a specific feature is worth doing, we can say that the users have asked for it.

Would you recommend Feature Upvote to a friend or colleague? If so, what would you say to them?

Nice, friendly, and helpful company.
